Georgian 14k Enamel Mourning Brooch
This is a Georgian-Victorian era mourning brooch, likely from England. The brooch is in memory of Ann Barker, who died at age 60 in 1829.
Made from solid 14 karat yellow gold, this antique mourning brooch has black enamel on the front with the words ‘In Memory Of’ surrounding a braided lock of hair. In between, there are pearls and faceted jet (or paste—I am not sure). I believe the pearls are real.
On the back, the pin has been inscribed with Ann’s obituary.
I acquired this piece from a gold dealer who uses newer technology to test gold. I also tested this piece with acid to confirm, as these brooches are typically not stamped.
The pin itself (what you would put through your clothes) appears to be silver or steel. I believe it is original to the piece but am not certain.
I have not cleaned this brooch and am offering it as found. It is in good, wearable condition, with some wear/aging, most notably:
1. A chip in the enamel under the letter Y. It is not noticeable until you inspect the piece.
2. At one time there had been a piece to either clip on to something or to wear this as a pendant which has broken off. The surrounding area needs to be cleaned. If you plan to wear this, consider having a jeweler who works on antique file it off or restore it.
3. Some wear to the black gemstones.
Brooch measures 1” across and 3/4” tall
Weighs approx 6.5 grams
